We see the utter hopelessness and trauma daily. So many are just in survival mode.
So many have layers of trauma and no we can’t fix it.
Yep, it’s easy to pass blame, but 12 years of this work has shown me that so many caregivers are just trapped in a system that has sucked the life out of them. Sure, some make poor choices, but what tools did they have to make those choices with?
It’s a vicious and sickening reality that their ‘normal’ is so different to mine.
God! That continues to be a revelation weekly. What the hell is normal? It’s only our perception of it.
Last week a teen defensively told me she hadn’t been abused for ages. I asked what ‘ages’ was. It was 6 weeks😣. She was trying to protect her abuser.
Her decision making about everything will be based on her ‘normal’.
Her self value will lie in her own experience.
Her choices will be informed by trauma.
But I digress….
We can’t fix everything. We can’t fix much at all actually, and who am I to decide what needs fixing anyway?
But I do know this….
All our tamariki (children ) are precious and deserve to smile. Right? The reality is 1000s in Te Tai Tokerau-Northland will be ‘lucky’ to get a meal today.
😇We at Bald Angels need to raise $50k in the next 10 weeks to bring Christmas Kai to about 1300 tamariki (400 whānau)
