Celebrating and empowering our Rainbow Rangatahi

Our youth have told us they don’t want to be ‘different’ or ‘special’. They want
to fit in and be accepted. Their voice is what leads us.

We started the Club in 2021 with a focus on the LGBTQIA+ community and over the
years, we have morphed into a space for all youth as long as you’re inclusive, kind
and respectful.

Our Rainbow Rangatahi Club is all about creating a safe community for our diverse
youth. Whether they’re super allies with inclusive and open hearts, neuro-diverse,
LGBTQIA+/Queer/Takatāpui or differently abled- all our youth deserve a safe space
to be valued and appreciated.

Our weekly club gatherings are Thursdays 3.30-5pm Kerikeri.
We have transport options and provide snacks-sometimes the most important part of
the Club apparently! But do get in touch to check each week before Wednesday
5pm, and let us know how many are joining us ‘cos we need to sort kai and book the
rides!

We just hang out, play games, chat, or sometimes we cook, take a trip, or learn
something new. We’ve made pottery, learnt some NZSL-sign language, met some
famous kiwis, sailed on the R Tucker Thompson, stuffed ourselves with blueberries,
been to movies and shows, made art and chocolate balls . Who knows what’s to
come.

It is a privilege and pleasure to connect with our vibrant and beautiful neuro-spicy
and colourful rangatahi and their friends and whānau who support diversity and all
the shades of uniqueness our kids bring.

Our mission is to create safe spaces, defined by rangatahi.

Our vision is that all rangatahi are empowered, seen, heard and supported in Te Tai
Tokerau.

A wee team of adults help supervise and empower our rangatahi to be the best
version of themselves.(We’d love more support to run the Club) We’re all Police
checked and are committed to the wellbeing of our kids, AND if youth or whānau feel
a need for professional counselling, or additional support we can organise referrals.

2022 community event: BEGINNERS GUIDE TO QUEER.
Sexual orientation and gender identity/expression are important aspects of a young person’s identity. But it can be confusing, disorientating, confronting and frightening…for them, and us.

The youth who took part displayed courage amidst great vulnerability.

Let’s make all our youth feel safe, seen and valued.

Sadly, it’s a fact that LGBTQIA+ youth are at far greater risk of negative health outcomes, and are more likely to attempt suicide, use illegal drugs, and experience homelessness, physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Depression, anxiety and isolation are also common themes in their world.

We have to ALL consider our biases and ask why we have them. Often it’s simply social conditioning. So we can simply change our mind- easy! And that could make a young person’s world so much safer.  Consider the courage it took for our friends to share their stories. 🧡💛💚💜💙🤎🤍💖
