Celebrating and empowering our Rainbow Rangatahi
Our Rainbow Rangatahi club is all about creating a safe community for our LGBTQIA+/Queer/Takatāpui/Rainbow youth.
Supporting our rangatahi guides everything we do, and it has been a privilege and pleasure to connect with both our vibrant and beautiful gender diverse youth and their friends and whānau who support the queer community as allies.
Our vision is that all Rainbow Rangatahi are empowered, seen, heard and supported in Te Tai Tokerau.
Our mission is to create safe spaces, defined by rangatahi.
An awesome team of adults who either identify in the queer community or are amazing allies help supervise and keep the colours flying. We’re all Police checked and are committed to the wellbeing of our rangatahi, AND if youth or whānau wish for professional counselling, we can organise referrals.
Meanwhile, we’re all having fun, learning & growing together, and we welcome anyone who shares our values of respect, partnership, safety, authenticity and equity.
Our weekly club gatherings are Thursdays 3.30-5pm at The Black Box Theatre, Summaree Place, Kerikeri. The Angel Waka does a pick up from Kerikeri High School at 3.10pm and can drop youth home after 5pm (within 20 km radius). But do get in touch to check each week before Wednesday 5pm, and let us know how many are joining us ‘cos we do kai and need to book the rides!

Sexual orientation and gender identity/expression are important aspects of a young person’s identity. But it can be confusing, disorientating, confronting and frightening…for them, and us.
Sadly, it’s a fact that LGBTQIA+ youth are at far greater risk of negative health outcomes, and are more likely to attempt suicide, use illegal drugs, and experience homelessness, physical, psychological and sexual abuse. Depression, anxiety and isolation are also common themes in their world.
We have to ALL consider our biases and ask why we have them. Often it’s simply social conditioning. So we can simply change our mind- easy! And that could make a young person’s world so much safer. Consider the courage it took for our friends to share their stories. 🧡💛💚💜💙🤎🤍💖
