No running water. No electricity. A proper shower is simply not an option. Teens from 12 up are smelling and unclean.
Do they know, or not? Are they embarrassed or pretending to be oblivious? The teachers and school nurses are crying out for help, while our teens are really suffering out there.
Our friends at Auckland schools, Takapuna Grammar, Vauxhall Primary, and Diocesan Sacred Heart College have been sharing goodness with us for years now in the Coats4Kids campaign. Huge mihi to awesome Aucklanders for caring about your neighbours up in the Far North.
One young Tane asked “ When do we give them back, Miss?”
To our friends in the far, Far North at Te Kao, where they seemed to be bemused about a delivery of balls just for them, we say, ‘they are yours to keep, go and have fun, play and enjoy!”
They were concerned about wars and the dangers of drugs. All children should have enough food and be warm. Mental health matters to them, and having a safe family means the most of all. They said having a safe adult to go to is really important. People would be respectful and there’d be no racism. They were compassionate, thoughtful and wise.
