No running water. No electricity. A proper shower is simply not an option. Teens from 12 up are smelling and unclean.
Do they know, or not? Are they embarrassed or pretending to be oblivious? The teachers and school nurses are crying out for help, while our teens are really suffering out there.
Imagine having to wash in the river in winter temperatures! Imagine knowing you smell, and friends are avoiding you. There are many stories from the rural areas. Maryanne, the school nurse, shares some of her thoughts in a video. It’s 5 mins but worth watching..
We had one Kerikeri situation where a lad was living in the car with dad, and he wouldn’t go to school because he knew he was dirty.
Personal hygiene is something most of us take for granted as a daily habit. Turning on a tap. Washing hair. Soaping up and rinsing off with warm water, just not possible in many homes around the Far North. We have had multiple requests to address this, and now we need your help.
We’ve put together some pack needs. (pictured).

We need: donations of these items (or similar), sewers to make drawstring bags about half the size of a pillow case, donations to purchase goods, sponsors to provide products, and volunteers to coordinate and pack the bags.
